Emmanuel Martin Guidry died of a sudden illness at his home in Kaplan, LA at 10:35 am on Monday, 11 Apr 1932. He became ill on Sunday evening at which time his illness was not considered serious11. Summerall Martin Guidry told me that his father Emmanuel Martin Guidry was involved in several serious gas attacks during WWI in France. This had a serious medical effect on him in his later life and was a contributor to his death22.

Leo Charles Saporito told me on 3 Sep 2000 that he knew Emmanuel Martin Guidry when he was young and affectionately called him ‘Beer’ because everytime that Leo met Emmanuel Martin Guidry, Emmanuel would say ‘Get me a beer’. Leo also said that most folks called him ‘E. M.’. My Dad, Summerall Martin Guidry, told me in 1994 that his father, Emmanuel Martin Guidry, drank alcohol a lot.

In the records there appears a four year discrepancy in the birth year of Emmanuel Martin Guidry. HEB-001 (v. 20 p. 175)5 gives his birthdate as 21 Apr 1889 and cites the church baptismal record23. The will12 of Cyrille Trasimond Guidry, fils provides this same birthdate. The gravestone inscription10 of Emmanuel Martin Guidry and the obituary11 from the newspaper at the time of his death cite his birthdate as 21 Apr 1893. This latter birth date is also found in several genealogical studies13,14. Mary Ruth Guidry, his daughter, told me in 1980 that her father was quite vain about his age and that, upon his death in 1932, his wife (Lillian Rose Clotiaux) put an incorrect birthdate (21 Apr 1893 rather than 21 Apr 1889) on his grave and in the paper as a last gift to him24.
