Notes for Charles Alcibiade BUTAUD
The year after his marriage in 1886 to Celestine LeBlanc Alicibiade Butaud purchased 295 acreas of land and the 80-year old George Greig house from his aunt Elodie Burgieres on 27 Dec 1887 for $5,500. This land was part of the old George Greig farm i n Prairie Gregg near Henry, LA. On this land he farmed sugar cane and cotton and raised cattle and mules for sale. Until his boys and girls were old enough to help with the chores it was a struggle for Alcibiade and Celestine. To do all the work required, he hired several people to work the farm.

In 1909 Alcibiade moved the old Greig house from near the swamp to the front of his property - a process that took three weeks and required a team of oxen to pull the home one mile on rollers. To make the move, he remove all the bricks from the home and tore off the top floor. After placing the home at the new location, Alcibiade repaired and enlarged the home to its present size. He added a bay windowed room and adjoining porch to the front. When he made these changes, a board over the front doorway was found that had inscribed “C. White - 1807-1809”. Mr. White was the builder of the home. The old home is still standing in 1999 near the intersection of LA 330 and Plum Road. On the west side of the old home is a live oak tree with a diameter of nearly ten feet and a limb spread of 160 feet. The tree is 200 years old. When Alcibiade died, the family sold the farm to his son Jean Alcibiade, who was known as Cousin Nook353.
Questions/Errors notes for Charles Alcibiade BUTAUD
HEB-001 v. 7 p. 77 gives the birthdate of Charles Alcibiade Butaud as 6 Mar 1863 while the gravestone is inscribed 1862. Since the church birth record as given in HEB-001 is contemporaneous with his birth while the tombstone inscription occurred after his death, it is more likely that the date of 6 Mar 1863 is the correct birthdate.

EVA-001 (p. 106) gives the marriage date of Charles Alcibiade Butaud as 25 March 1886 while HEB-001 (v. 17 pp. 104-105, 373) lists the marriage date as 25 February 1886. Since the HEB-001 records are obtained from primary sources and the origin of the EVA-001 records is unknown, I have accepted HEB-001 as correct.

HEB-001 v. 19 p. 34 gives the name Alexandre Bertrand to Charles Alcibiade Butaud.
