TOUR OF INSPECTION MADE BY THE SIEUR DE LA ROQUE. CENSUS. 1752. CENSUS OF THE SETTLERS AT THE POINTE A LA JEUNESSE.
. . . .The Pointe à la Jeunesse is situate on the narrows of the great lake of Bras d’Or. The lands lie exceedingly high and are covered with all kinds of mixed wood.
The settlers are unanimous in reporting the ground as unsuitable for cultivation. It is freely traversed with rocks, which prevent its being worked.
. . . .
Pierre Brau, ploughman, native of la Cadie, aged 26 years. Married to Margueritte Guedry, native of la Cadie, aged 24 years.
They have one daughter, 21 days old, not yet named, and Marie Joseph Brau, his sister, native of la Cadie, aged 18 years living with them.
The own one pig and four fowls.
. . .
When all the settlers landed on their arrival from la Cadie in August last, they owned between them the number of 188 oxen or cows, 42 calves, 173 sheep or ewes, 181 pigs and 17 horses. A comparison with the recapitulation will easily show how many of these have perished from want of hay on which to feed. The settlers had not even water to give them within reach, and now all ask to leave so fully do they realize that they cannot live here. “

Questions/Errors notes for Pierre BRAUD
Bona Arsenault in his monumental work on the genealogy of the Acadians at one point incorrectly lists the parents of Pierre Braud, husband of Marguerite Guédry, as Alexandre Braud and Marie Dugas. Later in his work he corrects this error and identifies the parents of Pierre Braud, husband of Marguerite Guédry, as Antoine Braud and Marguerite Dugas. Alexandre Braud and Antoine Braud are brothers - the sons of Antoine Braud and Marguerite Babin. Alexis Braud actually married Marie-Josephe Thibodeau - not Marie Dugas.
5298,5299 ____________________
“ Bona Arsenault mentions that Pierre Braud and Marguerite Guédry were exiled to Maryland.
5291 This does not appear plausible as we find this family at Rochefort, France where their daughter Agnes Braud married Olivier LePrince in 1770
5287 and at Nantes, France where their son Pierre Firmin Braud married Genevieve La Garenne in 1780.
5285 What may have caused the error in Arsenault was that at Port Tobacco, MD in 1763 was a “Magueritte Braux. widow, Marie Braux, Pierre Braux”
5300,5301. The widowed Margueritte Braux appears to have been Marguerite Landry (not Marguerite Guédry) and she was the wife of Simon Braux (not Pierre Braud).
5302,5303 ____________________
Daryl LaBine
5304 assigns a Jean Charles Breaux (Braud) as the son of Pierre Braud and Marguerite Guédry. It appears very unlikely that this Jean Charles Braud was their son as the family of Pierre Braud and Marguerite Guedry was exiled to France (see above) and never came to Louisiana. Jean Charles Braud was in Louisiana at least by 13 May 1775 when he had a son Jean Manuel Braud born in Iberville Parish, LA.
5305,5306 Jean Charles Braud married Marie Benoit although I cannot locate any record providing the date and/or place of the marriage. It is likely that Jean Charles Braud was exiled with his parents and family to one of the American colonies on the eastern seaboard and then came to Louisiana in the 1766-1770 timeframe with the first influx of Acadians to Louisiana.
Although LaBine gives his birth year as about 1753 in Louisbourg, Île Royale, Acadie
5304, it is likely that Jean Charles Braud was born about 1732, was the son of Charles Braud and Claire Trahan
5297, married Marie Benoit about 1752 with whom he had Charles Michel Braud (b. about 1753), Marguerite (b. about 1758), Ludivine (b. about 1762), Simon (b. about 1766) and Jean Manuel (b. 1775).
5307 He and Marie Benoit were exiled to Port Tobacco, MD where we find him in 1763 with his wife Marie, daughter Marguerite, son Michel and an orphan Remis Boudraux.
4461,4460 Jean Charles Braud and his family of Marie Benoit and four children arrived in Louisiana in February 1768 and were settled shortly afterwards at Fort Saint Louis de Natchez (just south of present-day Vidalia, LA).
5308 In December 1769 they moved down the Mississippi River to St. Gabriel, Iberville Parish, LA.
