Notes for Eleanor LABINE
“ It was definitely fun having writers for parents. When I was 5, Mom worked for the tv show Captain Kangaroo, and me going to visit that tv set was like meeting Santa Claus. Dad’s perks are more useful to me now. When I need to fix up my old house, I usually call him first for pointers. My grandparents were both bilingual, but Dad ran away from the French speaking nuns on his first day of kindergarten, which ended 250 years of our branch of the family resisting English occupation. I’m kind of sorry to miss out on that.
I am very VERY pleased to be offered the opportunity next month to give a presentation at NYC’s Federal Hall on the deportations where George Washington was sworn in to office. It sits on the site of the former town hall where many of the decisions concerning the NY Acadiens must have been made. It’s not exactly justice for Jean-Baptiste, scrounging for acorns to feed his 7 kids, but, hey, at least it’s a public ‘airing of grievances’ at a nationally recognized site. “
